Jordan Aloye as photographed by Claire Grogan.

This image was from a super quick shoot in June, early in the morning, as I was fitting in talented young actor Jordan Aloye before I started my usual shoots. I never normally do short shoots, nor in such early light but it all came together perfectly. Not least because Jordan was such a pleasure to work with, really focused and full of energy – and of course with that face who could take a bad shot!

I love the fresh, natural feel, the beautiful colours and way the soft morning light works on the skin. Jordan’s expression, showing both strength and softness, really engages the viewer and makes it a stand-out shot which is just what casting directors want to see.

The pavement was rough looking so I laid a collapsible Lastolite down onto the floor behind him which created an interesting background which perfectly matched the tones of the t-shirt – happy accident! Finally, I usually recommend no jewellery in headshots as I normally find it distracting but in this case Jordan’s silver chains enhance rather than distract and add subtle interest. In short, it all just worked!

Where shot: In the street behind my house
When shot:  June 2019, early morning
How shot: Natural light, reflector with diffuser fabric
What camera: Canon 5D Mk111 85mm lens at f/3.2
