Adam Hills

How did you become a photographer?
I was working on a cruise ship as a singer and bought a camera to capture my travels but found I was more interested in portraits.

How did you get into shooting headshots specifically?
As we were leaving the contract, I captured headshots for the rest of the cast... and they didn’t turn out too badly! So thought, 'How hard can it be?' Little did I know how easy I had it in Mediterranean spring light, unlike the challenges of London in February.

Where do you shoot?
I have my own studio on the Greenwich/Blackheath border where I’ve been for 7 years.

How would you define your style?
A mixed bag of either elaborate, busy and glamorous, or simple and approachable. I change my style and taste all the time, sometimes daily, depending on who’s in the room.

Tell us what you like most about your job?
I love experimenting with new equipment and techniques, and the days when you make a new friend for a few hours and the sessions fly by. The flexibility and income are also fantastic. I can't think of any other ‘trade’ where you can earn a similar income without a formalised training.

And tell us what you like the least?
Having been shooting for several years now, I find the days hard when a client comes in and has a lot of mental blocks stopping them from achieving a really strong shot. I wish everyone was as optimistic about the shoot ahead as I am at the start of a session! And keeping on top of deadlines when you also want to have free time with a young family.

Who is your photography hero?
I'm really not a artsy photography type. Maybe the people I watched a lot when I was learning in the early days: Zak Arias, Joe McNally and Scott Kelby.

What track is most likely to be playing in your studio, or on you iPod?
I'm normally rolling with Kisstory Radio, keeps me young and energised!

Jaffa Cake or Digestive?
Digestive.

Wine or Beer?
Wine with food, beer without.

Cats or Dogs?
Dogs.

How would you like to be remembered?
Innovative and generous.
