The Bursary

Launched in Spring 2017, the APHP Headshot Bursary Scheme is a major annual charitable initiative run by the APHP.

The scheme donates one headshot session with an APHP-qualified photographer to students at each of 20+ major UK drama schools (taking our list from http://www.federationofdramaschools.co.uk + deserving additional schools).

Each session is awarded by the school itself to a current 2nd year student (or final year, in the case of one or two year courses), on combined grounds of financial need, performance excellence and high academic achievement.

Recognising that APHP members work with hundreds of UK drama students each year, the scheme allows the APHP to contribute to the success of emerging actors across the UK at a vital stage of their training.

The APHP Chairman, Michael Wharley, comments: “Many of our members began their careers as performers, so we are all keenly aware of the pressures upon students as they begin life in the industry; the Bursary scheme gives a healthy number of them a headstart, while our workshops programme gives many more the tools and insights for lifelong headshot success.”

Bursary Awarding Criteria:

Made by each school to a current 2nd year student, on the basis of:
- Financial need - although this is not a hardship bursary, we ask that students in particular need are given first consideration.
- Performance excellence - exemplary displays of acting skill during the year.
- High academic achievement - superb performance in the written and reflective aspects of training.

Notes:
As this is a charitable initiative, no fee or deposit is payable whatsoever by the student for their award session. Recognising that a photographer who gives up his or her time to donate a session to the scheme loses a paying client, we do expect each awarding student treat the session as a professional commitment: taking it at the agreed time with facilitation by the drama school in required.
