Aslam Husain

How did you become a photographer?
I started taking headshots of my actor friends in drama school, and it quickly became a way to support myself as an actor in London. After a back injury took me away from acting in 2015, I threw myself wholeheartedly into photography.

Where do you shoot?
I shoot in my home studio in Catford, South East London.

How would you define your style?
Such a tricky question - it is hard to see your own style, and I think mine is always evolving. I’m drawn to finding something cinematic in my photos.

Tell us what you like most about your job?
I love actors! Meeting and talking to actors about life, the universe and everything is a real joy for me.

And tell us what you like the least?
When the light does not cooperate.

Who is your photography hero?
It is always changing as I discover new photographers. Currently it’s Roy DeCarava for his unique portraits of jazz musicians. But my uncle and my dad will always be my inspiration. They are the ones who got me hooked on photography.

What track is most likely to be playing in your studio, or on you iPod?
I love film scores. Anything Max Richter and the soundtrack for the Pina Bausch documentary are two of my faves.

Jaffa Cake or Digestive?
Being Canadian, I never really got into Jaffa Cakes - so I’d have to say Digestive.

Wine or Beer?
Red wine.

Cats or dogs?
Cats!

How would you like to be remembered?
For being kind.
