I would say it is time to get new photos when someone sees your headshot and asks when it was taken. That’s usually a sign you’ve been putting it off and its time to get new ones to reflect how you look nowadays!

There’s also many other reasons to get new photos; maybe you’ve drastically changed your appearance or maybe you’ve had a quiet period and want to jog some casting directors memories. Sometimes it's worth it if you feel that as you’ve matured as an actor. Perhaps your current headshot doesn’t accurately reflect the character types you can now play that maybe you couldn't tackle when you were fresh out of drama school.

Another giveaway that you need new shots is if someone notes in an audition that you’re much more unique in person. That's an indication your headshot isn't showing you off as much as it could.

Unless you feel your most recent headshot really isn’t working for you for one reason or another I would avoid getting it done more than once a year, save the cash and go to the pub instead.
