Nick Lester as photographed by Michael Pollard.

There was a time when red heads would dye their hair, occasionally lighter but more often to a shade of brown. This was before colour headshots really took hold in the UK acting industry. Now actors are encouraged to embrace, celebrate and promote all that is unique about them.

And so to Nick Lester, who contacted me to discuss some ideas for a shoot and the importance of showing the natural colour of his hair. Sometimes an actor will tell you that their hairstyle is ‘them’ and it has to be a certain way. Of course, I will very diplomatically discuss ideas with them that will involve changing that hairstyle during the shoot in order to widen their casting potential.

However, it was different with Nick. We worked out a variety of looks, emotions and ways of shooting to encompass all that he felt he needed at this point and yes, while hair colour was important, it should not be the main focus of the shots. So it was getting a good balance between Nick’s emotion and intent and his natural features.

This is one of a number of final shots chosen from the shoot. I had a clear idea for this shot. Very simple lighting and a simple, monotone ‘surround’ i.e. the grey background and t-shirt, to draw attention to the eyes and face and in doing so to the hair colour as well.

Where shot: In my studio room near Manchester.
When shot: March 2019
How shot: Key light, one background light and lots of chat.
What camera: Canon with a good prime lens…Other makes are available!
